A more lyrical storyteller than Isabel Allende, I've never come across. Read one page and you’re immersed in whatever world she chooses to create.
For anyone that thinks you can’t write both paranormal and cozy mysteries L.L. Bartlett is here to prove you wrong. If you can't work in a trip to Paris, Cara Black's mysteries might tide you over.
Looking for mysteries with a sense of humor? Dark mysteries? Maybe an adventure/romp/mystery? Lawrence Block does it all. The man's amazing. The last Jan Burke mystery I read kept me up waaaaay too late. Enough said. If you think the only Elvis is the one who sang, you need to pick up a mystery by Robert Crais. He writes standalone thriller-types, too, but I prefer the Elvis books. You've heard of Metropolis, but how much do you know about Metropolis . . . Illinois? Read all about it in the police procedurals by Lonnie Cruse.
If you enjoy cozies, you'll enjoy anything by Cindy Daniel. Love, death, Texas, and pickup trucks. What more could you want? Set in Michigan's Upper Peninsula (the U.P. for the unintiated), reading the books of Steve Hamilton often requires a warm blanket and a blazing fire.
Laura Lippman has created a protagonist I’d love to have as a friend. Mysteries and standalones set in Baltimore. Francine Mathews can tell a tale or two - and she does, from Nantucket to Europe to Bangkok to Jane Austen. Whew! What exactly does Robin McKinley write, anyway? Young adult, fantasy, or something else entirely? Don’t know and don’t care. I love her books no matter what category publishers, bookstores and libraries choose to stuff her into. Author of the Tracy Eaton mystery series, Kris Neri has written a standalone suspense novel, Never Say Die. Check out the excerpt, it’s great. And her recipes are pretty darn good, too :) I'm still cursing that I missed an opportunity to hear Sara Paretsky speak. Dang it, dang it, dang it. Coming in April of 2006 is Sandra Parshall’s book, The Heat of the Moon. Looks to be a great series! Not only does Darlene Ryan write award-winning Young Adult novels, she’s also published a children’s picture book and a non-fiction book chronicling her adoption of a baby girl. And don’t miss her poetry page. |
