Writing Links
People lie awake nights wondering if Miss Snark is the literary agent she claimed to be. But, honestly, why does anyone care? I just read her blog and appreciate all the information she freely dispensed. Here's the site you've always thought should exist. Chronological lists of series mysteries. You can sort by author OR by character. Plus, take a look at the right sidebar. "If you like...You might like..." might be a great introduction to new authors. I came across this site a while back and bookmarked it because a Reverse Dictionary sounded so useful, but I haven't found a use for it yet. Someday, though, I'm sure it'll be just what I need. God's gift to any writer hunting for an agent, Agent Query is a relatively new site. Please, please, let them keep it updated! Looking for a character name? Courtesy of the Social Security Administration, you can look up the top 1000 names in each decade going back to 1900. (That's at the bottom of the page.) Be careful, though. If you do this at the office, your co-workers will cluster around your computer making you find their name. If forensics are your thing, take a look-see at Zeno’s forensic site. Lots of stuff on Alicia Rasley’s website. Whenever I’m stuck in an outline, I reread her article, “The Top Ten Plotting Problems.” The topics of her archived articles have a romance writer’s slant, but are still useful to any fiction writer. Fan convention, anyone? There’s the biggie, Bouchercon, and there’s the smaller Magna cum Murder. More? Shaw Guides is a great place to start. But for a real writing conference, you can’t beat the Mystery Writers Conference put on by Book Passage. Outstanding, IMHO. Holt Uncensored bills itself as "a candid look at books and the book industry." Thoughtful commentary by a former book editor for The San Francisco Chronicle. The Mystery Writers' Forum - mystery writers and aspiring mystery authors sharing their trials and triumphs on a threaded bulletin board system. Writing World is full of articles about writing and the business of writing. They also offer a free bi-monthly newsletter. Sisters in Crime - an international organization created to promote the work of women mystery writers. And last but most definitely not least, The Guppies aka The Great UnPublished, an Internet-based chapter of Sisters in Crime. We are unpublished, hear us roar :) |
