Up North
What is this up north thing, anyway? Yes, my books are set in this lovely location, but if you want me to slap down a map and draw a circle around "up north" you'd better have a really fat pen. All I can say for certain is that it's in Michigan's lower peninsula. Attempting to nail it down definitively is impossible, for Up North is more a state of mind than an exit number. You know when you're there, and you know when you've left. Up north is summer tourists and blue water and fudge and bars with knotty pine walls and pick-ups on cement blocks and million dollar lakefront lots and 150 inches of snow in winter and white birches and cedars and clear air and time to breathe it in. Vacationing up north is watching sunsets and listening to waves wash over the beach as you drift into sleep. Spending a week up north is never enough -- there's a restaurant you didn't get to or a golf course you'd like to try or an art fair you missed by a day. Up north is not a place for suits or ties or high heels or pretensions. You relax, you smile, you have fun, and you don't feel guilty about any of it. This is the way it's supposed to be, you think, and wish you could stay longer. Living up north is all of that and more. But you'd better like winter! |
